Making Wine and Jam from Golden Plums – Belize

The final experiment in wine making for 2012 was with Golden Plum, a popular fruit that grows in most of Belize. While I have tried to research the universal name for the fruit, I could not find it, but I had enough ripe plums to make wine and jam.

The process is the same as in the other fruit, however one challenge in separating the fruit pulp from the juice was the type of seed that the golden plum has. It has a hard spiny type of seed that does not make it easy to squeeze the juice by hand, and thus even though I was using a muslin straining bag, I could not squeeze out all the juice.

I did not go through the complete photographic process as I did with the other value added processes, however the pics below validate the effort.

Don’t worry too much about the labels, the processes are still at experimental stages and the overall packaging and labelling will be another step in the process.
