Visited the Kin Yuc Tilapia farm in Motul, abour 50 Km from Merida Yucatan Mexico. The farm has 6 – 12M Diameter tanks and 2-8M Diameter tanks, the former for the larger fish and the latter for the fingerlings.
Photos attached feeding the fingerlings, harvesting the tilapia, sorting and weighing the tilapia, and the tank farm in various stages of operation, such as removing waste water and replacing with fresh, tanks completely empty for cleaning and repair. The waste water is used for irrigation of crops and waste material for composting.
The purpose of the visit was to get a live overview of the tank farm with above ground tanks built different than those that are in ponds which have been excavated. The maintenance of these ponds are much simpler as major maintenance just require the emptying of the tanks and replacing water. While I have been familiar with the predator issues from the tilapia I was raising, it never occurred to me that one of the predators would be bats, thus the reason for the plastic netting over the fingerlings tanks. The normal predators at the Savannah have been crocodiles, egrets, hawks, kingfishers, limpkin etc.
One photo also shows the main plaza in Motul with their church.
