Two basic requirements of entrepreneurship include courage and judgement. Judgement to select the best business ideas and courage to start with the first step. Many people have one but not the other. So many people have the greatest ideas, but they never go beyond being ideas, and so many people have courage and start businesses without having the necessary skills to do so. The combination of both creates a powerful characteristic of the entrepreneur. As my memory serves me, I believe the basic concepts came from Earl Nightingale, a program I took over 40 years ago)
One other point which is critical is the level of growth once the start-up commences. It may be relatively easy to make your first $1.000, sales per day/week/month, because at this point you are just what i refer to as the micro-micro-entrepreneur (one person business). To ump to $2,000 sales per day/week/month you need more resources, people, space, finance, and similarly the next $10,000, $50,000, $100,000 and so on. So many micro-entrepreneurs prefer to stay at the micro-level and never go beyond that level. Entrepreneurs are a diverse people and there is no single rule that applies to them, however research has identified some common characteristics, especially as one looks at culture, religion, education, gender, age, location, etc.
While the focus of this blog addresses the micro-micro-entrepreneur many of the characteristics apply to the micro, mini, small and medium, as well as large within the Belizean context. All photos were taken at the Sailing Association race in Corozal Town.
